Chise Sumida

If no-one knows that, it means it does not exist. Then, what does “exist” mean?

Commentary

If I could’t give a letter to you, of course it does not be read. However, it did exist undoubtedly. I expressed “the feeling that you don’t know” like that. You can see the right hand covering the left handhold. It comes from Japanese sign language and it represents “love”.

Breath of Silence

Kiyu Nishida

where silence lives

Commentary

This work is consisted of a theme “silence” and reacts to silence. When silence is maintained, a light bubble is gradually getting light, reaches the maximum, then a loudspeaker produces a pulse noise. The sound loops between the loudspeaker and a microphone, attenuate along the light bubble is getting dark. On the other hand, when silence is not maintained, the bubble light wavers in a dark and is not getting light. This behavior looks like as if the work breath and has a life in silence.
When the sound is suddenly stopped or produced, we can notice the sound existing there. For example, when an air conditioner is stopped, we can notice the sound of the air conditioner and there is/was the sound. This work stimulates people to notice such sound and make people notice the sound existing there. What this work requires keeping silence to enjoy this work correctly also stimulates people to notice the sound in a space.

第一回展示会 Luminescence

The First Exhibition: Luminescence

We created and exhibited our "minimal and analog" artworks along with a theme: Luminescence《cold light》− emission of light by a substance not resulting from heat such as a auld lang syne −

Motivation

The main theme of our group is "minimal and analog aesthetics," we decided this theme based on questions which we found in our school. Our school is for design and technology, so almost all of our work tends to create a design, otherwise, we were said it doesn't have advantages which we do by teachers or other colleagues.
About individual works, they tend to create kinds of entertainment, because it is attractive. And they tend to prevent creating art. They just say is it art? what is the difference between art and design? and so on.
We felt it's very strange.
We know the importance of thinking this kind of question, but there is nothing progress if we do nothing.
The person who creates something with thinking such questions is great. the one who just says criticism without any output has no mean.
So, we made this group and suggested this main theme for making a chance to create artworks.
"Minimal" means to create artworks with minimum elements toward the concept. This would not be able to do without deeply thinking about the concept of his/her work.
"Analog" means physical, we chose this word to present a work as a sculpture, because we want to create something beyond the TV monitor. Especially in our school, students tend to present their work with it. We think we can provide physical experience by outputting as a sculpture beyond the TV monitor.
We decided s sub-theme, "Luminescence" with the main theme.
We sought to create our work with those to focus on a more specific topic than the main theme, which leads to active discussions on what we want to express.

Catch the star

Chise Sumida

Have you ever tried to catch stars floating on the water? The surface of the water with the reflection of stars is so beautiful and reminds me of my childhood. Please scoop stars with “Poi” and put in the small bottle.

You can bring it your home if you like.

Commentary

The concept of “Scoop the stars” is catching stars. This concept comes from one Japanese song for children named “Hoshihitotsu” which I love. “Stars should be feel cold” “It’s may be a little heavy” “How can I made them floating on the water?” After much experimentation, I decided to use small glasses and luminescence powder. It’ll illuminate your room from the small bottle at night.

life

Takumi Saeki, Kaoru Terazaki

We spent a lot of time and money to make a waste.

Commentary

Since the time and money are spent on the transparent resin part, I will explain how to make it. First, we make a mold to make a silicon mold. A silicon mold is made by pouring silicon into a mold. Once the silicon becomes hard, we remove a mold. Then a silicon mold for pouring resin is completed. We pour resin with phosphorescent powder into a mold made of silicon, and when it is hardened, the resin parts are complete.

color mixture

Honoka Moribe

Three primary colors of lights ,red-blue-green are mixed in your shadow to create various colors.
Please, play with the lights and shadow that you made.

Commentary

When you illuminate a single object from multiple and distant light sources, it will appear as multiple shadows. The light mixes in the shade and can express any number of colors using only the three primary colors, red-blue-green.
I made the structure that let the audience to realize the various colors of light and create their own shadows by turning the transparent semicircle round.
I think that light and shadows are too common to be conscious of in daily life, but I want you to be aware of the beauty of light and the shadows of various colors which create in your hands by my work.

jellyfish

Kyousuke Fujita

I think that tentacles of a jellyfish wavering in the sea are aesthetic. Those are fancy, but I wanna be a jellyfish.

Commentary

I made a jellyfish with a wire and LEDs. I have a thing about that I also wanted to make use of a mechanism for visual design, for example cable to light on LEDs. I wanna be a jellyfish.

Sparkle

Kiyu Nishida

Look the world through holes.
Ah, human are beautiful.

Commentary

This work consists of three peep boxes. The author expresses a "sparkle" of the mental world. Each of the peep boxes is named "pray or entrance," "memory," "dialogue." Those three are supposed to watch in order. In "pray or entrance," a tiny light that looks dark unless you look closely. In "memory," multiple bright lights make as if abstract painting in the box. In "dialogue," Your eye is illuminated and reflected on a wall in the box.
Through those works and a caption, the author encourages observers to consider the aesthetics of the mental. And, he claims the mental world of the human is beautiful.
